Kazakhstan oil piped into China

www.chinanews.cn 2006-05-25 13:13:59

(Source: Xinhua)

ALATAW PASS, Xinjiang, May 25 - Crude oil from Kazakhstan poured into
China Thursday morning through a newly completed petroleum pipeline
linking the two countries.
Brownish oil sprang into a petroleum hub in Alataw Pass, northwest
China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, at 3:10 a.m. Thursday, about 30
hours after Kazakhstan started to pump oil into the pipeline, customs
officers at the Alataw Pass told Xinhua.
Technicians with the Sino-Kazakh Oil Pipeline Co. Ltd opened the valve on
the China-Kazakhstan border at 7:32 p.m. Tuesday after instructions were
received from their Kazak counterparts in Atasu, who started pumping oil
into the pipeline at 8:22 p.m. the same day.
Experts say construction of the oil pipeline is a win-win strategy for
both countries as it enhances China's oil supply and proves an ideal
outlet for Kazakhstan's oil export.
The pipeline, which extends 962.2 kilometers from Atasu in Kazakhstan to
the Alataw Pass of Xinjiang, was completed in November 2005 at the cost
of 700 million U.S. dollars.
It is designed to transmit 20 million tons of oil annually.

Chinese economy still faces deflation pressure

www.chinanews.cn 2006-05-17 08:39:06

Chinanews, May 16 - "As the consumer price index (CPI) in urban areas
will stay at a comparatively low level, deflationary trend still exists
in China in 2006." This is the overall assessment of the Chinese economy
this year by Tsinghua University's Center for China in the World Economy
(CCWE) on May 13.
CCWE researcher Yuan Gangming indicated that judging by the situation in
the first quarter of this year, the Chinese economy was hot but did not
go beyond the limit.
According to statistics by China's Central Bank, the country used half of
this year's loan quotas in the first quarter. The overly rapid growth of
loans caused by the increase of fixed-asset investment has drawn China's
attention. Not long ago, the National Development and Reform Commission
and the Central Bank respectively published policies to adjust overheated
industries and raised lending rates, in an effort to jointly control
package loans extended by local governments.
At the end of last year, CCWE predicted that this year's CPI would be
0.01%, indicating a serious trend of deflation. As statistics of the
first quarter came out, this center obviously raised the estimated figure
of 2006 CPI to 2.41%. Besides, the center raised its estimated 2006 GDP
growth rate from 8.98% at the end of last year to 9.5%, which is
consistent with the latest forecast by the World Bank.
Other statistics by the World Bank show that in the first quarter,
China's added 1.26 trillion RMB (US$157.5 billion) in loans, accounting
for more than 50% of the planned 2.5 trillion RMB for the whole year.
About half of this quarter's new loans were for real estate development
in Jan. and Feb. The World Bank quoted relevant statistics and indicated
that China's housing prices in this period kept rising while the vacancy
rate also went up.
As to the above figures, Mr. Aloysius Louis G. Kuijs, senior economist of
the World Bank Group Beijing Office, pointed out that China's newly built
housing may have surpassed demand growth.

70% of residents cannot afford new housing

www.chinanews.cn 2006-05-11 16:38:09

Chinanews, May 11 - According to a survey conducted by the Financial
Research Center of Beijing Normal University, around 70% of China's urban
residents do not have the means to buy a new home.
A new term has emerged on the internet -- "housing slaves". Following the
rapid rise in housing prices, more and more home buyers are carrying
heavy burdens on their backs.
"A roof for every resident" has long been the dream of the Chinese
people. To own their homes, some have to fork over around 50% of their
income. While they have the psychological comfort of home ownership, the
quality of their life has taken a tumble. They dare not change jobs, take
no trips and worry about illnesses and unemployment. This way, they
cannot help but become "slaves" of their homes.
In July of 2003, Liu came to work in Guangzhou after college and he and
his girlfriend together made over 10,000 RMB a month (US$1,250). They
spent 1,500 Yuan a month renting a two-bedroom flat in a convenient
downtown location and spend a good life.
In 2005, they started to consider buying their own property but after
checking out more than ten sites and finding the prices too high
(averaging 7,000 RMB per square meter), they found it hard to buy a
suitable 70 to 80 meter flat. Finally, they bought in the suburbs at an
average price of 4,000 Yuan per square meter and a monthly mortgage of
3,700 Yuan.
Their new home will be ready by the end of this year. They face great
pressure having to pay rent and mortgage at the same time. Liu was forced
to move and rent a single room for 900 Yuan a month and began to scrimp
on food and clothing. "We become completely trapped by our home and have
become its slave." Liu said with an air of helplessness.
Beijing Normal University's Financial Research Center has previously
published "Assessment report of financial security of China's real
estate" and reports that property prices have reached around 4,000 Yuan
per sq. m. in China's Eastern regions. According to China's 2005 per
household average annual income of 15,000 to 17,000 RMB, the housing cost
to annual income (for a 70 square meter flat) has reached 13. This means
that 70% of urban residents cannot afford to buy a new home.
