Learn Chinese online - British look for links in failed plot

WORLD / Europe

British look for links in failed plot

(AP)
Updated: 2007-07-06 08:48

GLASGOW, Scotland - When two doctors crashed a Jeep Cherokee into
Glasgow's Airport and then set it on fire in a desperate attempt to
ignite crude bombs it was clear to a policeman on the scene that they
were on a suicide mission.

People crowd outside the house of Sabeel Ahmed, an Indian doctor in
Bangalore, India, Thursday, July 5, 2007. [AP]

"They did not have a plan B," said Sgt. Torquil Campbell, who apprehended
suspects Bilal Abdulla and Khalid Ahmed after the botched attempt to
wreak havoc among Scottish vacationers packing the airport terminal.

"They both appeared very calm and collected, very assured of themselves,"
Campbell said Thursday on Sky TV. "They had nothing else to do - it was
as if they were waiting there to get blown up."

Baggage handler John Smeaton jumped into the fray, helping police
grappling with the suspects. "I got a kick in," he told The Guardian
newspaper. "Other passengers were getting kicks in. The flames were going
in two directions."

The eight suspects arrested in Saturday's airport attack and two failed
car bombings a day earlier in London were all foreigners working for
Britain's state health system, and investigators are pressing to find
what brought them together. They also are looking for links between the
six Middle Eastern suspects and two Indian nationals arrested in the case.

Police have refused to release "operational details" of the case. But the
investigation would now be at the analysis stage, said Bob Ayers, a
former US intelligence officer now at Chatham House, an international
affairs think tank in London.

"They've got all the evidence they're ever going to have. There may still
information coming in, but it will be based on what they've already got,
like DNA from the cars," Ayers said.

Using cell phones recovered from two Mercedes sedans loaded with gasoline
and propane tanks in London and other telephone records, authorities are
building up a "link analysis" of what calls were made, Ayers said.

"They're recreating the network of all the people involved and building
that network using cell phone records, computer records, DNA,
fingerprints - anything that will establish who was communicating with
whom," he said.

At least five of those in custody appear to have some link to Glasgow's
Royal Alexandra Hospital.

Ahmed, identified by staff at the hospital as Lebanese physician employed
there, is now being treated at the facility for horrific burns suffered
when he set himself on fire after crashing the Jeep loaded with
rudimentary bombs into the airport's main terminal Saturday.

Abdulla, a passenger in the Jeep, is an Iraqi doctor employed by Royal
Alexandra, and a doctor there has said a Jordanian physician held in the
case had an office at the hospital.

Two other suspects, men aged 25 and 28 whose identities have not been
revealed, were arrested at the hospital's residences. Staff described
them as a junior doctor and a medical student.

On Thursday, police were still examining a Glasgow house rented by
Abdulla, which a British security official said authorities believed was
the site where the plotters made the bombs used in both the London and
the airport attacks.

Neighbor Susan Hay told The Associated Press that police said they were
"stripping" the home Thursday morning to look for fingerprints and other
forensic materials. A large tent - set up Sunday - screened the garage.

Police have refused to identify which suspects lived in the house, but
Denis O'Donnell of the local Paisley Cab Company, said his taxis had
picked up Abdulla at the house frequently.

"We picked him up between 18 to 19 times since about May 20, mostly to
the hospital but once to the airport," O'Donnell told AP.

Brian Harvey, a 60-year-old construction worker who lives on the street,
said he had seen a green Jeep Cherokee parked outside the home. "It
seemed unusual, strange over here," Harvey said, explaining that most
other vehicles on the street were more modest.

Abdulla is believed to have known suspect Mohammed Asha, when Asha worked
at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, where Abdulla has relatives.

Abdulla visited Cambridge as recently as three weeks ago, and was there
regularly to visit an uncle and his grandmother, said a cafe owner who
once rented Abdulla an apartment in the eastern city. He agreed to talk
about Abdulla only if his name wasn't used, to avoid damaging his
relations with the suspect's family.

Shiraz Maher, a former member of a radical Islamic group, said earlier
this week that he knew Abdulla at Cambridge University and described the
suspect as a hard-line Muslim.

Chinese Class - China coach tries to save job in Asian Cup

Sports / Soccer

China coach tries to save job in Asian Cup

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-30 21:52

China coach Zhu Guanghu hopes to save his job in the Asian Cup.

In truth, it may be too late.

China has taken several batterings going into the continental
championship: a 2-0 loss to Australia, a 1-0 defeat by a weak Thailand,
and 4-1 loss to the United States against a patchwork American team.

Zhu acknowledges he's been told by Chinese soccer officials to get to the
final four - or else - in the Asian Cup, where China plays in Group C
against Malaysia, Iran and Uzbekistan.

Shadowing Zhu's failure has been the success of China's under-23 coach
Ratomir Dujkovic, who took over the Olympic team after leading Ghana to
the second round of last year's World Cup in Germany.

Dujkovic's team has been winning, and some guess the Serbian coach will
eventually take over the national team no matter what Zhu does in
Malaysia.

Local newspapers are taking sides - against Zhu and in favor to Dujkovic.

"It is clear the national team has not made any improvement and the
tactics and style of play are still a mess under Zhu," the Beijing
Evening News said.

Titan Sports offered this: "Nobody is optimistic about the national
team's prospects at the Asian Cup ... It's up to the China Football
Association to make the right decision and replace (Zhu) as soon as
possible."

Zhu has been under pressure since taking over in March 2005 for Arie
Haan, who quit after his team failed to qualify for the 2006 World Cup.
China has reached only the World Cup finals only once, but lost all three
games and failed to score in the 2002 event co-hosted by South Korea and
Japan.

Still, Zhu claims victories aren't far off.

"I have to take responsibility for the defeats," he said after losing to
the Americans. "But I believe we are always improving and it will not
take long for us to win a match."

Playmaking midfielder Shao Jiayi, who plays in Germany for Energie
Cottbus, has also tried to sound optimistic, picking China among the
tournament favorites along with Australia, South Korea, Iran and Japan.
Japan is the defending champion, beating China 3-1 in the 2004 final when
the Chinese were tournament hosts.

"Losing in pre-tournament friendlies is n also named Manchester United's
Dong Fangzhuo among five forwards.

The major absence from the team is out-of-form Li Jinyu, a top scorer
with Chinese Super League champions Shandong Luneng. He scored 26 goals
last season.

China Squad: Goalkeepers: Li Leilei, Yang Jun; Defenders: Du Wei, Sun
Xiang, Zhang Yaokun, Li Weifeng, Sun Jihai, Zhang Shuai, Ji Mingyi, Cao
Yang; Midfielders: Shao Jiayi, Li Tie, Zheng Zhi, Zhao Xuri, Wang Dong,
Zhou Haibin, Zheng Bin, Mao Jianqing; Forwards: Han Peng, Dong Fangzhuo,
Zhu Ting, Qu Bo, Wang Peng. Extras: Xin Feng, Li Yan, Xu Yunlong, Du
Zhenyu, Tao Wei, Chen Dong, Zong Lei.

Paralyzed gymnast on track of amazing recovery

By Yu Nan (chinadaily.com.cn)
Updated: 2007-06-28 13:59

China's paralyzed gymnast Wang Yan has improved beyond doctors'
expectations since she underwent fatal surgery in Shanghai, said Wu
Xiqin, chief coach with the Zhejiang Provincial gymnastics team.

"On behalf of Wang Yan's family and myself, we want to thank everyone for
their concern", Wu said on the phone. "The critical period for the
15-year-old is over, and that she has improved amazingly has even
surprised the diagnosis group only after having surgery seven days ago."

Wang Yan, a 15-year-old Chinese gymnast felt into coma after she broke
her neck in
an accidental falldown from uneven bars at the national championship held
in Shanghai, June 10,2007.[sina.com]

Wang fell into a coma at the national gymnastics championships in
Shanghai June 10 after landing head-first on the mat in her dismount from
the uneven bars with her second and third vertebrae fractured.

Sources after the accident said that the gymnast would likely be
paralyzed for life, but after surgery and treatment, her condition
improved considerably.

The team of doctors thoroughly examined Wang's impaired mobility
yesterday. But, whether she could transfer out of the intensive care unit
(ICU) will depend on her test results, Wu added.

Seven days since the major surgery, the injured teenager is able to eat
spoonfuls of food, indicating she is getting stronger physically.

By having her mother by her side and visible recovery, the 15-year-old
quickly throws off the gloomy feelings.

According to her doctors, the gymnast is able to relieve herself on her
own, and as her muscular sense is gradually returning, she can swing her
left arm that at first she could not move ideally, lift her legs up and
down and has regained some hand mobility.

So far, she hasn't had any side effects since the surgery succeeded,
which satisfies the diagnosis group. To their knowledge, it is a good
sign. Yesterday's test of her limb functions showed she is now out of
danger, and the locomotor system is steadily recovering, according Xu
Jiangguang, doctor of Wang Yan with Shanghai No.6 Hospital.

"We will focus on, during the next stage, helping the gymnast regain the
damaged neurological functions," Xu said.

"I am optimistic Wang can stand up some day," her coach said, full of
confidence. "But it seems too early to say that she has overcome the
injury as she needs to live at the special care ward for at least two
months."

But whether Wang will move out of the ICU would rely on an examination
report which is due out this week.

WORLD / America

US military: 14 troops killed in Iraq

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-22 00:44

The U.S. military said 14 American troops have died in multiple attacks,
including five killed Thursday in a single roadside bombing in Baghdad.

sweat during a patrol in southern Baghdad, Iraq, on Wednesday, June 20,
2007. [AP]

Elsewhere, a suicide truck bomber struck the Sulaiman Bek city hall in a
predominantly Sunni area of northern Iraq, killing at least 16 people and
wounding 67, an Iraqi commander said.

Thousands of protesters also rallied in the Shiite holy city of Najaf,
100 miles south of Baghdad, waving Iraqi flags and the black and green
Shiite banners with slogans such as "Death to al-Qaida" in a show of
unity following the bombing that brought down the twin minarets of a
revered mosque in Samarra.

The latest U.S. deaths raised to at least 3,545 the number of American
troops who have died since the war began in 2003, according to an
Associated Press count.

The deadliest attack was a roadside bomb that struck a convoy in
northeastern Baghdad on Thursday, killing five U.S. soldiers, three Iraqi
civilians and one Iraqi interpreter, the military said.

A rocket-propelled grenade struck a vehicle in northern Baghdad about
12:30 p.m. Thursday, killing one soldier and wounding three others,
another statement said.

On Wednesday, another powerful roadside bomb killed four U.S. soldiers
and wounded another in western Baghdad, while two Marines died in
fighting in Anbar province, to the west of the capital.

Southwest of Baghdad, two soldiers were killed and four were wounded
Tuesday when explosions struck near their vehicle, the military said,
correcting an earlier statement that gave the date of the attack as
Wednesday.

Counting a previously announced U.S. fatality that occurred Tuesday, the
latest military statements meant that 15 troops were killed over a
three-day period.

The explosion in Sulaiman Bek occurred about 10:30 a.m., and killed 16
people, Maj. Gen. Anwar Hama Amin said. The commander of the Iraqi army's
2nd Brigade blamed the blast on al-Qaida, saying it was the latest in a
series of strikes by the terror network against government officials,
whom they accuse of collaborating with the U.S. and the Iraqi government.

Sulaiman Bek is about 100 miles north of the capital and just outside the
border with Diyala province, where thousands of U.S. troops are engaged
in an offensive against al-Qaida in Iraq.

Amin said the target apparently was the mayor, who has lost five
relatives in previous assassination attempts. The blast heavily damaged
the city hall, along with several nearby houses and stores.

Thamir Mohammed, a 28-year-old newlywed, said he was on his way to city
hall to do some paperwork to get a new ration card when the blast
occurred, knocking him off his feet and wounding him in the head and legs.

"I was walking in the street heading to the city hall when a truck drove
up and parked outside. The driver got out and was just outside the truck
when the explosion took place," Mohammed said from his hospital bed in
nearby Tuz Khormato.

It was the latest in a series of attacks as al-Qaida fights back as the
U.S. intensifies operations against the terror network in Baghdad and
elsewhere around the capital.

A U.S. airstrike aimed at a booby-trapped house in one of the centers of
those offensives, the Diyala provincial capital of Baqouba, missed its
target and "accidentally hit" another structure, wounding 11 civilians on
Wednesday, the military said, adding the incident was under investigation.

U.S. troops had cleared the area to destroy a house containing explosives
believed placed by al-Qaida, but "the bomb missed its intended target and
struck another structure," the military said. "Reports indicate that 11
civilians were injured."

The initial target was later destroyed by a Hellfire missile, producing a
large secondary explosion, according to the statement.

A spokesman for the 1920s Revolution Brigades, a nationalist Sunni
insurgent group that has begun cooperating with U.S. and Iraqi forces in
the fight against al-Qaida in Diyala, said an airstrike mistakenly struck
a building being used as a headquarters by the group. The spokesman, who
declined to be identified due to security concerns, said two members were
killed and four were wounded.

Maj. Gen. Abdul Karim al-Rubaie of the Iraqi army said the offensive that
began Monday in Diyala was going well and operations were focused on the
areas of Jurf al-Milih and the northern part of the Baqouba market, which
has been the site of several recent execution-style killings by al-Qaida.

Hospital officials said ambulances were bringing dozens of bodies of
militants who have been killed from the western half of the city, which
was under a strict curfew.

The latest military report on the Diyala offensive said U.S.-led forces
had killed 41 insurgents, discovered five weapons caches and destroyed 25
bombs and five booby-trapped houses.

With all of the nearly 30,000 additional troops ordered to Iraq by
President Bush now in place, the military said the massive operations on
Baghdad's flanks were "a powerful crackdown to defeat extremists" and
named the combined offensives "Operation Phantom Thunder."

A bombing that destroyed the golden dome of the Askariya mosque in
Samarra on Feb. 26, 2006, set in motion an unrelenting cycle of
retaliatory sectarian bloodletting, but the son of a top Shiite
politician blamed the violence on Sunni extremists and Saddam Hussein
loyalists, and urged the Najaf demonstrators to maintain peace.

Ammar al-Hakim whose father Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim, the leader of the
Supreme Islamic Council of Iraq, is in Iran for cancer treatment also
criticized a U.S.-Iraqi security plan in Baghdad and surrounding areas,
which is now in its fifth month.

"The security situation in Baghdad, Diyala and other areas shows that the
security plan needs revision and development in order to achieve greater
results," he said. "We demand that the government shoulder responsibility
in this revision and put forward the necessary plans to impose security.
Security and services are vital and they should be the top priority of
the Iraqi government."

Violence persisted in Baghdad, with a series of mortars or rockets
slammed into the U.S.-controlled Green Zone, which houses the U.S. and
British embassies and major Iraqi government headquarters raising
fresh concerns about the thousands of Americans who live and work in the
heavily fortified area in central Baghdad.

A huge plume of black smoke rose from the sprawling complex on the west
bank of the Tigris River and helicopters buzzed overhead after about nine
blasts occurred in quick succession around 10 a.m.

At least one mortar round struck a parking lot used by Prime Minister
Nouri al-Maliki and his security detail, an official from his office
said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to
release the information.

The U.S. Embassy confirmed rounds of indirect fire, the military term for
rockets or mortars, but said it did not have information about casualties.

Elsewhere, sports officials gathered for a funeral for an Iraqi
bodybuilding champion, Mahir Mohammed Ali, who was killed in the bombing
of a Shiite mosque Tuesday in central Baghdad.

At least 21 people were killed or found dead in attacks nationwide,
including the director of a branch office of radical Shiite cleric
Muqtada al-Sadr who was shot to death near the southern city of Hillah.

BEIRUT - A powerful car bomb killed anti-Syrian Lebanese lawmaker Walid
Eido and nine other people on Wednesday in an attack his allies blamed on
Damascus.

A soldier secures the area next to a burnt car after an explosion in
Beirut, June 13, 2007. [Reuters]

A parked sports utility vehicle packed with 60 to 80 kg (132 to 176 lbs)
of explosives blew up as Eido's car was driving away from a Beirut beach
club, a senior security source said.

One of the parliamentarian's sons and two bodyguards were among the dead.
At least 11 people were wounded.

Eido, 64, belonged to the majority anti-Syrian parliamentary bloc of Saad
al-Hariri, which controls the government.

A Sunni Muslim lawyer, he had been a foe of Syrian influence in Lebanon
and an ally of former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri, who was
assassinated by a suicide truck bomber in February 2005.

Eido was killed just three days after a UN Security Council resolution
came into effect setting up an international tribunal to try suspects in
Hariri's assassination.

"This crime is a clear message from the Syrian regime to Lebanon in
response to the establishment of the international tribunal," Saad
al-Hariri's coalition said in a statement.

Hariri says Syria was behind his father's killing and later attacks.
Damascus denies involvement. Including Eido, seven anti-Syrian figures
have been slain in Lebanon since 2005.

"It is the same fingers that assassinated the martyred premier Rafik
al-Hariri," Hariri said of Eido's killing.

There was no immediate comment from Syria. Its allies in Lebanon
denounced the assassination.

"Big, ugly cloud"

The blast, near a seafront amusement park and a football club, destroyed
several cars and shattered windows of nearby buildings. It hurled the
bodies of Eido and his son over a wall and into the football ground,
witnesses said.

Two players in the Nejmeh football team, which is in Lebanon's top
league, were among those killed.

"It sounded like it was in your backyard," said Herbert Lahout, 45, a US
citizen who had been playing volleyball on a nearby beach. "It was like a
mushroom cloud, a big ugly cloud."

Five less powerful bombs have exploded in and around Beirut in the past
month, killing two people.

Eido's death was likely to fuel tension between the government and the
pro-Syrian opposition led by the Shi'ite Muslim Hezbollah group, which
has condemned the killing.

Condemnation also came from the United States, France, Britain, the
European Union and the United Nations.

"There has been a clear pattern of assassinations and attempted
assassinations in Lebanon since October 2004," US President George W.
Bush said. "Those working for a sovereign and democratic Lebanon have
always been the ones targeted."

"The United States will continue to stand up for Lebanon, its people, and
its legitimate government as they face these attacks," he added.

The Beirut government declared Thursday, when the funerals were due to
take place, a day of national mourning.

"Lebanon and the Lebanese will not submit to terrorism," Siniora said
after an emergency cabinet session.

He said the government was asking the UN commission investigating
Hariri's assassination to help with the inquiry into Eido's killing and
add it to the tribunal's work.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged the Lebanese government to bring
the perpetrators to justice.

"When Lebanon's people are going through a democratization process, this
kind of heinous terrorist attack to assassinate political opponents is
just unacceptable," he added.

The UN Security Council, in a policy statement initiated by France,
condemned "any attempt to destabilize Lebanon through political
assassination or other terrorist acts."

Tension was already high in Lebanon, where the army has been battling al
Qaeda-inspired Islamist militants at a Palestinian refugee camp in the
north for more than three weeks.

Hariri's bloc linked Eido's assassination to the clashes with Fatah
al-Islam, saying these were "two sides of same coin which is the
terrorism of the Syrian regime."

Damascus denies any links with Fatah al-Islam.

Arab League to hold Mideast crisis talks

(AFP)
Updated: 2007-06-15 01:01

Arab foreign ministers will hold an extraordinary meeting in Cairo on
Friday to discuss the violence in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, a league
official told AFP.

Arab League Secretary General Amr Mussa attends a meeting at the Arab
League headquarters in Cairo, 2006. Mussa called for an immediate halt to
deadly infighting in the Gaza Strip, warning of the danger it poses to
the Palestinian cause.[AFP]

"We will hold an extraordinary meeting on Friday to examine the situation
in the Palestinian territories and in Lebanon," Hisham Yussef, Arab
League Secretary General Amr Mussa's chief of staff told AFP late
Wednesday.

Yussef said the meeting -- initially scheduled for Saturday -- had been
brought forward because of the severity of the situation.

On Wednesday, Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora called for crisis
talks to discuss the murder of MP Walid Eido, a vocal critic of the
Syrian regime, who was killed along with his eldest son, two bodyguards
and six other people in a seafront bomb blast.

In the Gaza Strip, fierce gunbattles between loyalists of president
Mahmud Abbas' Fatah party and supporters of the Islamist Hamas movement
have killed more than 70 people in three days and were continuing in Gaza
City on Thursday.

have been slain in Lebanon since 2005.

Learn Chinese - North Korea fires missiles off coast

North Korea fires missiles off coast

SEOUL, South Korea - North Korea fired short-range missiles off its
western coast in an apparent test Thursday, South Korea's Defense
Ministry said, amid a deadlock in international negotiations over
Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program.

A North Korean missile unit takes part in a military parade to celebrate
the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Korean People's Army in
Pyongyang in this picture taken April 25, 2007 and released May 30, 2007.
[Reuters]

The United States immediately denounced the launch, saying the activity
was "not constructive."

A South Korean Defense Ministry official said it had intelligence that
North Korea launched the short-range missiles into the sea off its
western coast.

"We are trying to confirm how many were fired and what type of missiles
they are," the official said, speaking on customary condition of
anonymity.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency also cited two unidentified intelligence
officials as saying the North fired at least one missile. One of the
officials said Pyongyang fired two - one in the morning and one in the
afternoon - which is believed to be part of the communist regime's
"routine drills," according to Yonhap.

The missiles were either land-to-ship or ship-to-ship models with a range
of less than 62 miles, and fell into North Korea's territorial waters,
the report said.

The news came two weeks after North Korea test-fired at least one
short-range missile into eastern coastal waters, which South Korean and
US officials played down as part of the communist country's regular
military exercises.

But Thursday's launch drew criticism from US National Security Council
spokesman Gordon Johndroe.

"The United States and our allies believe that North Korea should refrain
from testing missiles," said Johndroe, accompanying President Bush to the
Group of Eight summit in Heiligendamm, Germany.

"North Korea should focus on the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula
and fulfill its obligations under the Feb. 13 agreement" in which North
Korea pledged to shut down its main nuclear reactor in return for
financial and diplomatic incentives.

"This kind of activity is not constructive," Johndroe said.

In recent weeks, North Korea has refused to move on its pledge to shut
down its main nuclear reactor over a delay in withdrawing $25 million of
its money at a Macau bank that was blacklisted by the US for allegedly
helping the North launder and counterfeit money.

The North has made the release of the funds a key condition to
disarmament, having boycotted international negotiations for more than a
year over the issue, during which it conducted its first nuclear test in
October.

In July 2006, North Korea also test-fired a barrage of missiles,
including a long-range one believed to be capable of reaching even parts
of the US

North Korea is believed to have produced enough plutonium to make as many
as a dozen or more nuclear bombs, but experts say it likely does not have
a bomb design advanced enough to be placed on a missile.

Ask Them Why: Good fences make good neighbors

(Ask Them Why)
Updated: 2007-06-04 15:35

President George W. Bush told President Putin honestly that... As Putin
is going to leave his post, the future of US/Russia relations could be
uncertain.... Let say our community is safe, it doesn't mean we go to
sleep and let the door unlock... Every country has to defense itself.
Also, management must have short-term and long-term planning. The
long-term planning is not established in the period of George W. Bush's
presidency, but since Reagan's era....

Whatever Putin said, the US missiles in Europe are not going to
stop...... Ask the OLD & NEW Europe inclusing the satellite states of
Russia.... How do they feel? Can they trust Russia after Putin leaving?
On the other hand, the United States of America cannot setup the missiles
and rada overthere without Poland and Czech Republic's aproval. Why? Ask
them.

Putin should know that good fences make good neighbors, and that's never
been truer than right now. Someone wants to be a good friend to you, but
he or she needs to know your limits. Be kind but firm about your standard.

Japanese farm minister commits suicide

TOKYO - A scandal-tainted minister in Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's cabinet
has committed suicide, media reported on Monday, compounding problems for
the Japanese leader whose support had already dived ahead of a July
election.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe talks to the media at the Prime
Minister's official residence in Tokyo May 28, 2007. A scandal-tainted
minister in Abe's cabinet has committed suicide, media reported on
Monday, compounding problems for the Japanese leader whose support had
already dived ahead of a July election. [Reuters]

The suicide by Agriculture Minister Toshikatsu Matsuoka came two months
before an election for parliament's upper house, the first big test at
the polls for Abe's ruling coalition.

"This will have serious political fallout, but at this point it's hard to
tell how much," a government official told Reuters.

Matsuoka - under fire for a series of political funding scandals - was
found unconscious in his room at a residential complex for lawmakers in
Tokyo, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuhisa Shiozaki told reporters.

Media said Matsuoka had hanged himself in his room. Police later
confirmed had died in hospital.

Local media had linked Matsuoka to at least two political fund scandals
including one involving massive, dubious spending on his office near
parliament.

Last week media also reported that he had received political donations
from businessmen involved in a bid-rigging scandal.

Matsuoka had repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

The suicide came as Abe's public support rate slumped to its lowest level
since he took office last September, increasing chances his ruling camp
could lose its majority in the July upper house election.

Only 32 percent of the voters who responded to a weekend survey by the
Mainichi newspaper backed Abe, down 11 points from April, while a
separate poll by the Nikkei business daily put the prime minister's
support rate at 41 percent, down 12 points.

The Mainichi survey showed that 42 percent of the voters want the main
opposition Democratic Party to win the July election, compared with 33
percent who want Abe's ruling Liberal Democratic Party to win.

Federer ends Nadal's 81-match clay streak

(Agencies)
Updated: 2007-05-21 08:57

World number one Roger Federer produced an astonishing turn-around to
beat Rafael Nadal for the first time on clay courts in the final of the
Hamburg Masters on Sunday.

Switzerland's Roger Federer poses with the trophy after defeating Spain's
Rafael Nadal in a final match at the Hamburg Masters Tennis tournament in
Hamburg May 20, 2007. Federer won the match 2-6 6-2 6-0.[Reuters]

The triple Grand Slam titleholder's 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over the French
Open champion underlined his belief that he has a chance of winning in
Paris in three weeks and becoming the first player since Rod Laver in
1969 to hold all four Grand Slams at the same time.

"It does feel like a breakthrough," said Federer, after inflicting the
first defeat on world number two Nadal on clay in more than two years and
ending the Spaniard's record-breaking 81-match winning streak on this
surface.

"I have the greatest of respect for someone who can win 81 matches on the
trot like that - everyone knows how physically tough it is.

"I finally played well and I also played the right way against him," said
Federer.

"Now we are going to the French Open and it's going to be interesting to
see both our reactions."

But it required an amazing twist for it to come about. For an hour of the
match Federer, whose form has been in a slump, looked a beaten man.

"I don't know exactly why the match turned around," said Nadal.

"I had chances at 2-1 in the second set and then he played very well.

"Maybe I was not the same like always mentally. I feel a little tired
mentally, but physically I was OK. I have had a lot of matches and it's
difficult, but I am very happy to have played Hamburg."

Federer was quickly behind, being outplayed in the first set, and was
almost a break of serve down in the second. But after averting the
crisis, the Swiss player's level went up fast as he took eleven of the
next 12 games and the match.

It suggested that for Federer, who admitted to having been affected by
his decision to part with coach Tony Roche last weekend, the match was
played as much with the emotions as with the risk-taking brilliance of
his tennis.

Federer nevertheless made a discouraging start. He could only get five
first serves in during an opening service game, and in his second service
game he was broken.

Nadal was playing his usual relentless weighty rear court game, varying
the angles but taking few chances, and the rewards were coming
unexpectedly fast against an uncertain opponent.

Federer got a warm round of applause from the crowd when he opened the
second set with his best service game so far, but then he sunk to a new
low, from which he seemed unlikely to recover.

But recover he did. Perhaps it was a feeling that things could not get
worse which made it possible, for Federer attacked his way freely and
impressively to four points in a row, two of them won from the net.

After this he sprung to life. Immediately he broke Nadal's serve for the
first time, pummeling three fierce forehand winners, one of them with a
return of serve which Nadal could not even lay a racket on.

And then he broke Nadal again in the eighth game. By this time the clay
court king was beginning to look disconcerted by the penetration of the
Federer attacks and was making uncharacteristic errors of his own.

Once Nadal pulled a forehand wide from a good position and pulled a face
in disgust and then attempted a drop shot and netted it, throwing his
head back in disbelief.

But Federer was playing unbelievably. His ground strokes were just as
forcing but now with far fewer errors, and after Nadal had put a forehand
wide at the end of a long rally to drop serve at 0-2 in the final set, it
was clear the character of the match had altered.

Federer was also coming to the net more now, although on the most crucial
point of the final set, the point which opened the door to a double break
of serve at 4-0, he hesitated to come in.

At the second attempt he did so however, and his second volley elicited
the passing shot error from Nadal that he had been hoping for.

"It was important to try to get on top of him and stop him dictating,"
said Federer. "In the first set maybe I was going for my shots too early
but that's OK if I lose a set that way. So I wasn't worried.

"For me it's nice to be playing well again after last week's
disappointment. I was struggling through the week because I had a rough
draw, I think."

Nadal said: "I made more mistakes than usual - I played very short and he
feels the ball well. But I came here and played some of my best tennis
and I can't be sad that I lose one match to the world's best player. I
shall go to the French Open just as confident."

Maradona: 'I'm alive and I want to keep living'

(AP)
Updated: 2007-05-09 08:37

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Diego Maradona says he no longer drinks or
uses drugs, and plans to return to playing small-scale exhibition soccer
games.

"For my two daughters, I'm going to continue to the end," the 46-year-old
Argentine soccer great said. "I'm alive and I want to keep living."

Maradona was noticeably thinner when he appeared early Tuesday on a
popular TV show. He was released Sunday after spending 16 days in several
local clinics to treat what doctors said was excessive alcohol
consumption that led to a form of hepatitis.

Maradona has battled obesity and cocaine addiction since his 1997
retirement and has had eight serious hospitalizations in the decade since.

"I no longer drink alcohol and it's been 2 1/2 years since I've done
drugs," he said. "I just drink juices."

He said he planned to return to playing "showbol," seven-a-side,
small-field exhibition soccer, although he did not say when.

Maradona remains a beloved figure in Argentina. He captained the national
team to the 1986 World Cup title and is considered among the greatest
players in soccer history.
