By the end of 2004, China's cumulative foreign direct investment has reached nearly 37 billion US dollars. In 2004, almost half of China's non-financial foreign direct investment was distributed in Latin America while nearly 40% was distributed in Asia. These investments were mainly targeted at industries in mining, business services, manufacturing, wholesale and retail. Chong Quan, spokesman of China's Ministry of Commerce, pointed out that there were the following characteristics in 2004 China's foreign direct investment: investment scale expanded rapidly and investment widely distributed in various industries, mainly in manufacturing, business services and mining. Asian regions accounted for 50% of China's contracted investment and Hong Kong and Macau were still investment hot spots. Investment of enterprises supervised by the Central Government and the same from coastal regions markedly spurred China's economy.
